HVAC UV light systems

A germicidal lamp mounted inside your air handler, aimed at the part of the system that grows mold: the cold, wet evaporator coil. We size it, install it, and tell you honestly what it will and will not do.

Why the coil is the target

Your evaporator coil sits in the dark, runs cold, and stays wet all cooling season. That is close to ideal conditions for mold and biofilm. As growth builds up on the fins, two things happen: airflow drops and the system works harder, and every cycle of the blower pushes air across that growth on its way to your rooms.

A UV lamp pointed at the coil keeps that surface clear continuously. This is the part of UV in HVAC with the strongest track record — it is a maintenance tool for the equipment as much as an air quality one.

Straight answer

Coil-facing UV reliably keeps the coil clean. Claims about disinfecting all the air in your house are much weaker — air moves past an in-duct lamp fast, and contact time is short. Anyone promising you sterile air is overselling it.

What a good installation includes

  • Correct lamp placement. Positioned for line of sight to the coil surface, with enough clearance that the lamp is serviceable later.
  • Ozone-free lamp selection. Standard germicidal lamps emit at 254 nm and do not generate meaningful ozone. Lamps that also emit at 185 nm do produce ozone, which is a lung irritant. We use ozone-free lamps.
  • Safe power connection. Wired so the lamp cannot be viewed while energized, since direct UV exposure is harmful to eyes and skin.
  • An interlock or clear labeling. So anyone opening the unit later — including a different technician — knows there is a UV source inside.
  • A replacement date on the unit. Lamps keep glowing long after their germicidal output has faded. Most need replacing annually; some rated longer. We write the date on it.

What homeowners ask us

Is a UV light actually worth installing?

If you have had recurring mold on the coil, a musty smell when the air handler kicks on, or a system in a humid crawlspace or attic, yes — it addresses a real, ongoing problem. If your coil is clean and your house is dry, the benefit is smaller and you may get more out of fixing humidity or ventilation first. We would rather tell you that up front.

Do these lights create ozone?

Standard germicidal lamps used in HVAC operate at 254 nm and are not meaningful ozone producers. The ozone concern applies to lamps that emit at 185 nm, which is a different product. Check the specification before you buy anything advertised as an "air purifier," and if the marketing describes an ozone or "activated oxygen" feature, that is the one to avoid indoors.

What does UV light actually kill?

Germicidal UV damages the genetic material of microorganisms so they cannot reproduce. It works on bacteria, viruses, mold, and other microbes. How effective it is on any given organism depends on dose — the intensity of the light multiplied by how long the organism is exposed to it. That is why a lamp aimed at a stationary coil surface performs so differently from one shining into moving air.

Does it replace my air filter?

No. UV does nothing about dust, pollen, dander, or particulate matter — those are the filter's job. The two do different work, and a good filter is the higher priority of the two for most households.

Will it lower my energy bill?

Indirectly, and only if your coil was fouled to begin with. A clean coil transfers heat better and restricts airflow less, so the system runs less. If your coil was already clean, do not expect a change on the bill.

How much maintenance is involved?

Very little — but it is not zero. The lamp needs replacing on schedule, and the sleeve or bulb needs a wipe if it films over. A lamp that has been ignored for four years is providing decoration, not disinfection.
